An area resident alerted this office of a potential scam today. This one was a post card received through the U.S. Mail claiming to award the citizen with $100 in free fuel at one of three major brand gas stations. The card provides a reference number and a number to call within a few days to an area code 855 number. (855 is a toll free pre-fix number).
Sheriff Cox called the toll free number and played along with the person on the other end. The contact reported that I had been contacted and rewarded because of being a good customer with either Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. The person claimed my $100 gas card was going to be in the mail but I needed to provide a credit or debit card number for a 1 time fee of $3.90. When the sheriff made further inquiry the man could not tell us which credit card company was giving away $100.00 in fuel in exchange for $3.90. The male claimed to represent a specific business involved with the 3 credit card companies, however a quick search engine check did not reveal any such company name within the United States.
Be aware of who you do business with and do not fall for quick trick type of scams. If your credit card company wants to reward you for being a good customer they already have your information. Keep your money as you earned it.
