The week before Christmas the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office staff played Secret Santa as we were fortunate enough to collect over $4,000 in donations for this fun and worthwhile project. Our goal was to help good people who are struggling due to unforeseen reasons.
In addition to numerous donations we also received many names of people and families being nominated for assistance. The unfortunate side is we had more names than we could effectively help, so we drew names of those that met the criteria.
One such person was Gerda from Chillicothe that we met and discovered she was doing her laundry by hand. Thanks to some help from Lowes; Gerda received a very nice new washing machine. Pam Jarding was working when our staff went to the business and when she learned what we were doing she not only helped out but she personally bought the laundry detergent to be delivered!
Another was a lady we met that had lost virtually everything in a recent home fire. Our project was able to help her with a nice gift card to help get her life and new home back in order with things she needs.
We were able to help quite a few families with serious needs, some were battling serious medical issues, others were trying to live day to day, and we were even able to help a foster care mother and her foster children enjoy Christmas.
We typically do not share this information with the media, but this year I heard some feedback that someone was telling people we were giving money away from the sheriff’s office budget; which is absolutely not true.
All project funds were donated by local citizens and businesses to which we are extremely thankful!!! We also wish to thank Piggly Wiggly and Lowes for their continued help. And a big THANKS to all the wonderful people with The Concerned Citizens group who help make these donations tax deductible.
Our staff had a great time going over the entire county meeting, talking to, and helping some very nice and wonderful people that is best described as a very humbling but joyful experience.
Be safe, stay warm, and THANK YOU for allowing us to be a part of this entire community!
